Richard Gill School Blog 062-Building confident leaders, one step at a time.

What a magnificent start to the 2026 school year! It is a joy to walk through our gates each morning and see the momentum building across every facet of Richard Gill School. From new infrastructure to new leadership, we are truly "building confident learners, one step at a time."

New Horizons: Our Bus Turning Bay is Open!

We are thrilled to announce that our new Bus Turning Bay is officially operational. This project was made possible through the Safe Bus Access Grant funded by the NSW Government, and we extend our sincere gratitude to Bengalla Mining Company (for additional funds towards the project), Transport NSW, Osborn’s Bus Company, and Hunter Pro Signs for helping to make this possible.

While our permanent fencing is being finalised, temporary measures are in place so students can safely enjoy the new green space and watch the morning arrivals. This project is a significant milestone in our school’s journey, ensuring our students arrive safely and with ease.

In the Classroom: The Science of Success

This year, our students are diving deep into research-backed learning through our partnership with Good to Great Schools Australia. By utilising Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI), our teachers break down complex concepts into "small wins," ensuring every child builds a foundation of confidence and success. This systematic approach includes rigorous phonics through InitiaLit and Reading Mastery, skill-building in Spelling Mastery, and structured problem-solving via Connecting Maths Concepts. At Richard Gill School, we believe in the power of a balanced education; we pair these data-supported literacy and numeracy programs with creative learning and exploration to ensure we are educating the whole child and setting every student on a path to long-term success.

Leadership in Action: Year 6 Milestone

Last week’s assembly was a proud moment for our community as I presented our Year 6 Leaders with their Captains badges. Each candidate displayed immense bravery, delivering speeches on how they intend to serve our school.

As our school continues to grow, so will our leadership opportunities. For now, it is wonderful to see these students setting such a fine example for their peers.

Welcome Miss Kyra!

We are delighted to welcome Miss Kyra McMorrow to the RGS team one day a week. As a specialist in Music and Piano, Miss Kyra is already making an impact; I have personally enjoyed hearing the beautiful sounds of our Year 1 and 2 students mastering the piano. We are lucky to have your expertise, Miss Kyra!

STEM Innovation Hub

On Wednesday 25th February, our Year 1–6 students ventured to the STEM Innovation Hub to explore cutting-edge resources. By taking STEM outside the classroom, students see how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths apply to real-world challenges. These hands-on experiences deepen learning by encouraging critical thinking and resilience, allowing students to grow through trial, error, and discovery. We look forward to continuing this program throughout 2026.

Looking Ahead: Year 7 in 2027

We are delighted to announce that we are now officially accepting Expressions of Interest for Year 7 in 2027.

If you are seeking a secondary education defined by small class sizes, expert musical tuition, and a supportive environment focused on sustained academic growth, Richard Gill School may be the perfect fit for your family.

Why choose a small school for secondary education? Small schools offer a unique "village" atmosphere where every student is known, valued, and heard. This high level of individual attention fosters greater emotional well-being and allows teachers to tailor the curriculum to each student's specific strengths, ensuring nobody gets lost in the crowd during these pivotal teenage years.

Year 7 Information Night: Early Term 2 (Details to follow).
